“SWEEPING SAND”
Built in 1946 by Franze Menze for Harold and Ellen Johnson of Gary, Indiana, camp #2 remains as close as possible to the original structure. Though the Johnsons were not native to Marquette, most of their cottage was built from materials native to Marquette County (stone quarried from south of the Marquette Branch Prison, a log floating in the lake became the fireplace mantel, and the like.) The Frick family purchased “Sweeping Sand” in 1981 and have kept it pretty much in its original condition, believing that simple pleasures are the best pleasures supporting and continuing what Burt Frick (d. 1984) called the promised land.
