Shoreline “Bathtub Ring” . . .
Background, News, and Updates
In the fall of 2024, several members noticed a new mineral buildup along the water’s edge at Middle Island Point. It was seen on the rocks in front of the “rock camps”, out at Partridge Island and neighboring Presque Isle Park. This has never occured before. The Board is pursuing several avenues to try and discover the source of the mineral(s) in the water - and discover what causes the mineral buildup on the rocks. There is some belief, unsubstantiated at this time, that the conversion of the coal unloading facility at Presque Isle to a limestone delivery and storage operation may be part of the mystery.
Spring 2025 update. As the ice melted off the rocks this spring the “bathtub ring” is no longer evident. What this indicates about it’s source and presence last fall - and whether it will return - is yet to be discovered.
More information will be added to this page as the Board’s inquiry moves forward.
